Saturday April 25th: 9am – 1pm
This is a two-day workshop.
Guthrie Master Carpenter Tom Truax
Guthrie Technical Director Josh Peklo
Automation is amazing and we’ve been doing it for millennia. In the Arts & Entertainment Industry, automation isn’t growing more popular as it is more sophisticated. The applications are the same: to make things more accurate and precise; to simplify tasks; to save labour, but the tools available have become more sophisticated and affordable.
While the principles of automation are universal, the actual practice will vary based on resources, space and desired outcome. In no other field is it so explicitly clear that stagehands are multi-disciplined engineers than in automation.
In an engaging, hands-on, do-it-yourself workshop, we will teach you all about the ideas and concepts of automation, and give you a chance to build your own automated systems. Whether building simple machines or complex robots, the ideas and skills in this workshop will be applicable and useful.
As an additional bonus, participants in this workshop will have first access to a special short backstage tour and workshop on Sunday July 26th of the automated systems at work in the Guthrie’s production of The Music Man. See the ideas of the workshop put into full-scale practice!
Normally a $270 cost, we are able to offer this at a $190 reduction or 71% savings thanks to generous funding form the Minnesota State Arts Board via the Clean Water Land and Legacy Amendment and the generous support of the Guthrie Theater Scene Shop.
We are committed to making working in the arts accessible to everyone. If this cost is a financial hardship to you, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org to inquire about scholarship opportunities.
All Bedlam Members receive a 20% discount.
