Baba Yaga. Somehow, I managed to pick up a several Baba Yaga-inspired stories at the library without realizing it. I even managed to read one of them all the way through before I thought “Hm, that chicken-legged old woman with magical powers who takes in lost children and uses them for own ends is awfully familiar”. Y’know, the one that’s introduced in the first 5 pages.
The setting is fascinating and intelligent, and the writing treats the reader with respect. Perhaps interesting to this audience, it also has an interesting treatment on the power of art and theater.
So how good was it? I read 200 pages before I realized it was a Baba Yaga retelling. That good.
